Programs That Make a Difference

Discover our impactful programs designed to uplift and support those in need, fostering hope and resilience in Salem and the surrounding areas.

Children’s Feeding Programs

Salem Area Ministries (SAM) partners with Salem and western Roanoke County schools to provide student-led food pantries and school gardens that expand access to healthy foods and hands-on learning. Serving over 200 families weekly, the pantries follow a “student-choice” model and are supported by donations and SAM funding, while a three-year $93,000 VFHY grant is helping establish and expand school gardens from elementary through high school. Together, these programs give students a voice in promoting nutrition, addressing food insecurity, and shaping healthier community policies.

Clothing Ministry

For over 40 years, Mrs. Dorsey’s Clothes Closet has provided free clothing, shoes, and household items to families and individuals in need throughout Salem and surrounding areas—no referral required. Each month we serve 400 households, including those experiencing homelessness, living on fixed incomes, single parents, immigrants, and others facing challenges. In 2025, we experienced over 3,400 guest visits, equating to 5,162 household members, and 2,255 children. We also distributed over 760 winter coats, and logged more than 4,800 volunteer hours. Guided by the call to “Love Your Neighbor as Yourself,” our volunteer-staffed ministry offers dignity, compassion, and hope to a diverse community.

Student Health and Wellness

Our student health and wellness programs support both the immediate needs and long-term well-being of children in our community. Through Personal Care Packets, SAM provides essential hygiene items helping students come to school clean, confident, and ready to learn. Beginning in summer 2026, the Wheels of Hope Bike Program will serve more than 125 elementary and middle school students each year, prioritizing those facing economic hardship. By providing bicycles, helmets, safety gear, and education, the program promotes physical activity, builds healthy habits, and expands access to safe spaces and resources, empowering children to lead more active, healthy lives.

These efforts help ensure that children in Salem and western Roanoke County schools have the tools and resources they need to learn with dignity and confidence.
